There’s a saying, “When life gives you lemons… make lemonade“. Today just might be one of those days where you just have to squeeze those golden lemons, add some sugar and sweeten the taste…
Why write about Life Giving You Lemons?
Often we can find ourselves having bad days. You know the kind when you wake up tired and you stub your toe cursing.
You’re seeing your circumstances as hopeless, like there is no progress on your goals, nothing seems to be going your way.
You catch yourself seeing the glass half full or even empty. Complaining, whinging, moaning seems to be your focus for the day.
It’s like there is a dark cloud hovering over your head. The day tastes sour, like life has given you lemons…
The thought of getting on with your day can be quite a struggle and you might just want to stay in bed and sleep it off. Depending on the situation, this may be the right choice although in most cases it is a better decision to dust off the cobwebs and soldier on!
To hold onto that optimism and take those sour lemons and make them into this lemonade everyone keeps telling you tastes so good!!
Even those of us with a clear goal, plan and purpose for our day can wake up feeling a little ordinary. You don’t feel like making that phone call you booked in first thing, or you don’t feel like your morning yoga session. Sticking to the usual routine also has a bitter taste.
Your significant other, your kids, the cat or dog are even out of sorts. It’s like your mood is reflecting back on them or was it them echoing a negative, sour vibe to you?
When life gives you lemons, who ever’s vibration is the cause, you don’t like today AT ALL!
SOMETHING has to give, some sweet sunshine and happiness light needs to make these sour lemons into some lemonade!!
Here’s a Definition from Wikipedia:
“When life gives you lemons, make lemonade” is a proverbial phrase used to encourage optimism and a positive can-do attitude in the face of adversity or misfortune. Lemons suggest sourness or difficulty in life, while lemonade is a sweet drink.
When Life Gives You Lemons,
How Do You Make Lemonade?
In the scenario of changing the sourness of the day into a more positive, light filled vibe the recipe is simple…
There are many simple and effective ways to find gratitude.
The simplest being creating the habit of setting up each day with daily gratitude.
I’ve read of people (namely Oprah Winfrey) keeping a regular gratitude journal as a daily practice. If you’ve ever read or watched the movie The Secret, you would have seen mentioned that waking up every morning with the first thing you think or do being taking a moment to be grateful for something, anything. Might be simply that you are awake, alive and breathing and it is a new day full of infinite potential.
It takes time to build a habit of gratitude and all good intentions first thing in the morning may turn the beginning of the days potential lemons into lemonade.
What about when you do accidentally spill your coffee or step on a piece of lego on the way to the kitchen?
Acknowledge the lemon but learn to be less reactive to the trigger.
Stop yourself, step back and remind yourself of the good things outside of that one negative happening.
Find gratitude in the situation, count a win (even small wins help) Might be that you have more coffee and have the time and resources to make another and clean up the spill…
When life gives you incidental lemons like these, it comes down to deciding to be less reactive and choosing to see and find gratitude for the bright side.
I love this excerpt by Clarence Edwin Flynn from the book “The Rotarian” 1940
“Life handed him a lemon,
As Life sometimes will do.
His friends looked on in pity,
Assuming he was through.
They came upon him later,
Reclining in the shade
In calm contentment, drinking
A glass of lemonade.”
When it comes to life giving you lemons that pack a hefty, sour punch having a strong arsenal of gratitude habits is your ally in creating the lemonade.
The gratitude journals, the ritual of recognising and counting your wins come into play to raise your vibration and keep you more attune to ward off the sour lemons.
For added sweetness, try some extra gratitude exercises to raise your vibration, your light, and your happiness meter.
This is key to making the sweetest lemonade!
